Food Porn Friday- Burma Superstar

To make up for yesterday's lack of post {Blogger was down, bad bad boy}...
Feast your eyes on this!!!  Burmese cuisine indicative of its neighboring influences (including India, China, Laos, and Thailand) with spices and seasonings showcasing the entire lay of the land.  Mix 'em all together and what to you get?  Bold, robust, over-the-top spectacle of what it's like to eat like a Burmese superstahhhhh!  Too bad you can only get it in the Bay....boooo!

Burmese Samusas with Chicken: Burmese raviolis hand wrapped and filled with curry spices, potatoes, deep fried, and served with their house special sauce

Tea Leaf Salad: "Yes, they really do go to Burma to get the tea for this salad, and it's worth the trip". With textures from fried garlic and peanuts made magical with tableside tossing.

Rainbow Salad: Salad made with 22 different ingredients. Four types of noodles, green papaya, tofu, onions, dried shrimp, (or vegetarian) and a tamarind dressing.  Yumchi!!!  I could have this every day vs. the more popular Tea Leaf Salad (a bit too nutty).

Classic Burmese Chicken Casserole with Cardamom Cinnamon Rice
Braised chicken leg (on the bone) and shrimp buried in a claypot and baked with biryani rice, raisins, and nuts.  My fave!  Almost like a Burmese style paella...and I lovelovelove paella!

Spicy and Crispy Chicken:  Deep fried chicken breast in a sweet, tangy, and spicy sauce with chili and garlic.  Almost akin to chinese orange chicken, only I've had much, much better.  Heavy handed on the sauce made for soggy chicken.

Burmese Style Curry with catfishBurma SuperStar's speciality curry made with tomatoes.  Tastes like it looks, a big pile of mush.  Pass.

Mango Shrimp:  Stir fried shrimp with fresh mangos in a light chili sauce.  Just ok.  Nothing extraordinary.

Garlic Noodles with prawns:  Flour noodles with fried garlic, scallions.  Similar to pad thai without the tamarind flavoring.

Coconut Rice:  Aromatic jasmine rice cooked with coconut milk and topped with fried onions.  Soooooo good!  I'm not much of a rice eater (yes, I'm Asian!) but this simple concoction was soooo fragrant it had me shooting balls of rice in my mouth even after we'd taken it togo.  Yummmmmers!

PlathaIndian influenced pan fried layered bread.  Super oily, super scrumptious...with a texture and flavor very similar to Chinese scallion pancakes.

Dried Fried String BeansStir fried string beans, garlic, and chili sauce...Super salty!  My girls love their string beans so we literally had it in every joint they served it in...Tell 'em to lay off the salt if you're ordering the dish.

Pumpkin Pork StewTender pork stew slow cooked with kabocha squash and ginger.  Another one of my faves!  Always order a curry dish when dining at an East Asian establishment...you can tell a lot about their cuisine by how well they make curry.  This one, light and mild, tops a lot of my go-to-curry-lists.

Braised Duck with BoyChoySavory slices of tender duck in a sweet garlic and wine sauce.  A-ok, I'm not a total fan of duck, but devoured the bokchoy.

How can you say no to that adorable face???

Overall rating:  4 out of 5 stars!
Muy delicioso save for some of the passable dishes (Catfish curry, spicy chicken, mango shrimp, braised duck)...Everything else is a HIT!!!
*Thanks for the recommendation Jen Ky!  We loved it!!!*

Mmm... looks so yummy! Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to eat those dishes with nuts (I'm allergic) but everything else looks great. I don't think Vancouver has any Burmese restaurants. Guess a trip to Cali is in order!
